Why It Moved

The Story Behind the Move

METAdown 11.1 percent in Week of July 23 to July 30, 2026

Catalyst

Free cash flow fell 91% and 2026 AI spending guidance rose to as much as $145 billion

Why It Mattered

Meta reported the same night as Microsoft, committed to the same kind of AI spending, and got the opposite verdict, because it could not point to revenue the spending had already produced. The stock fell for an eleventh straight session, the longest losing streak in its history.

Risk Note

Free cash flow falling 91% removes the cushion, and management responded by committing to spend more. Eleven consecutive down days signals a sustained change of mind by large holders rather than one bad reaction, and until there is visible return on the spending the stock has no natural floor other than valuation.

Reader Takeaway

The market does not punish spending, it punishes spending it cannot yet see a return on. Watch cash flow, not just the earnings headline.
