Why It Moved
The Story Behind the Move
Catalyst
Gulf to China tanker earnings above $520,000 a day as Hormuz traffic thinned
Why It Mattered
Integrated oil companies rose 4 to 5 percent on the same shock and Teekay rose 9.07 percent, which is the difference between owning the commodity and owning the bottleneck. The company ended the second quarter with more than $1.2 billion of cash.
Risk Note
No company disclosure landed inside the measurement window, so this is a macro catalyst that reverses on a headline. Annualising the second quarter puts the stock at roughly four times earnings, which is the market saying plainly that it does not expect these rates to last. It is also the thinnest name in the five at about $30.5 million of trading a day.
Reader Takeaway
When a shortage is the story, the company that gets paid the published price is usually a cleaner read than the company that gets paid a margin you have to infer.
